White Bear Hopi Arts was established in 1972 by the late Oswald Qo-tsa-honow
(White Bear) Fredericks, a noted artist and co-author with Frank Waters
of the "Book of The Hopi".
His mission was to present to the larger public the art of the Hopi
people. That mission is still carried on today by family members who
are artists in their own right. John Fredericks,
his son Thomas Fredericks, as well as
John's sister Evelyn Fredericks manage
the gallery purchasing pottery, Kachina carvings, sculpture and other
Hopi crafts. All are obtained directly from local Hopi artisans. Family
art is also offered here. John and Thomas are noted Kachina carvers
while Evelyn works in stone and limited edition bronze sculptures.
Special commissions for carving and other works by John, Thomas and
Evelyn, are welcome.
White Bear Hopi Arts strives to offer the best of traditional and contemporary
work by living Hopi artisans. We guarantee the authenticity, quality
and craftsmanship of every piece of art offered. We invite our patrons
to experience the Hopi culture by visiting us, in this way much can
be learned about the Hopi world view and the art that is the expression
of our culture.
